Sure, these aren’t necessarily a requirement. However, those who want to prevent dust build-up inside or outside of their console should take note.

Specifically, there’s four mesh PVC screens that go over each fan intake/outtake. In addition, there’s rubber-plugs for each port or opening; USB, HDMI, power input, storage expansion and the disc drive. As an added bonus, they’ve even included thumbstick covers for the Xbox controller.

The PlayVital Black Nylon Dust Cover is exactly like their cover for the Series X, but this one is specifically made for Series S. Although only meant for Series S consoles that lay horizontally, it tightly covers the entire console for protection while you’re not using your Xbox. It has a custom-like fit that perfectly encases the top of the Series S with only a small opening for the ports on the back-side.

Although it doesn’t go around the bottom, it tightly seals around the perimeter of the console. The exterior of the material is quite burly with extra thick nylon throughout. The interior, on the other hand, is much softer and plush feeling. This keeps the surface between the Series S exterior from accumulating any scuffs, scratches or abrasions that may accidently occur when your console isn’t in use.

While the Series S PlayVital Black Nylon Dust Cover isn’t meant for use when the console is turned-on, it’s a great way to prevent dust build-up over time. Slipping it on and off is easy, and unlike their Series X version, there’s no Velcro to mess with. A quick and easy slip-on and slip-off is all it takes to install and remove it at will.

As a nearly identical option to the PlayVital, the Mcbazel Dust Cover for Xbox Series S is another great choice. However, this is a cover that’s only meant for vertically-oriented Series S consoles. Comprised of 1680D oxford nylon cloth, it has about the same thickness as the PlayVital, although the interior is not quite as soft and plush. Regardless, it offers nearly full protection, with the only areas left being exposed as the ports and base of the console.

Like other dust covers in the same category, it’s only meant to be installed while the console is turned off and not in use. While it does cover the front USB port, all of the rear-ports are cut-out and left accessible. There’s no Velcro or any straps to mess with, simply slip it on or off with ease.

In comparison with the PlayVital cover, the Mcbazel Dust Cover for Series S is a bit more affordable. In fact, it’s nearly half the price. That said, it seems to offer the exact same amount of protection, but the interior fabric is just not quite as soft. This isn’t a real big deal for most, but something that we thought we should point out.

ECHZOVE Dust Filters and Plugs Kit for Xbox Series S

Although you’ll need to have access to a lot of these ports, those that don’t have a cable plugged into them are susceptible to dust and debris intrusion. Therefore, placing a rubber nub inside each unused port is a great way to prevent internal dust build-up over the course of time.

Each of the silicone plugs and mesh fan filters fit perfectly. They’re precisely cut and made specifically for the Series S console, so nothing is left open. While there is some precision required for placing the air intake/outtake filters, once the ECHZOVE dust filter and plug kit is installed, nothing necessarily needs to be removed. Best of all, it’s reasonably affordable and includes everything you need. Additionally, installation is a breeze and no tools are required.

Benazcap Series X Top Cover and Dust Filters

For those looking for something a bit different, the Benazcap Series X Top Cover and Dust Filters offer just that. Rather than completely encasing the entire console, it contains a top-cover and two mesh filters for preventing dust and debris intrusion. The top cover is the most unique feature about it. With an assortment of pegs, it’s placed directly into several open holes on the top opening of your Series X console.

Once installed, it holds tightly and completely encloses the top air outtake. When your console is not in use, you’re supposed to keep it shut. When you want to play, simple open up the top cover and use the hinged opening to fold it outward and uncover the top vent. This way, air movement isn’t dampened and you can rest assured knowing that the internal components have unrestricted airflow. Once you’re done playing, simply close it shut so dust and debris doesn’t naturally accumulate while your console isn’t in use.

In addition to this, the Benzacap cover also includes three PVC mesh screens with adhesive backing. These are to be placed on the air intakes located on the back of the Series X console. This, in conjunction with the semi-permanent top cover keep the internal components much more free of dust than they would otherwise be. Best of all, the top cover has a built-in headset stand that retracts in both the open and closed positions. We see it as an added bonus and not a main feature, although it’s definitely nice to have!

BUBM Dust Cover for Xbox Series X

Similar to the PlayVital, the BUBM Dust Cover for Xbox Series X is another great option. Rather than being made from a stiff nylon material, it’s made from an elastic nylon that provides a snug fit around the exterior of the Series X. Although it’s only available for a vertical orientation, it provides a tighter fit than anything else we’ve seen. In fact, the material is similar to a wetsuit, with elasticity intertwined in every fiber of the material, giving it a soft yet firm wrap around the console.

Although it’s only available in a vibrant green color, all of the ports, including the USB port and power button on the front are left exposed for easy access. The backside contains a small Velcro strap that keeps it snug around any cables you may have plugged in. While we could have done without the obnoxious “BUBM for the game” logo on the front, it isn’t too big of deal for most people.

Like other covers that slip over the entire console, the BUBM cover must be removed when you’re playing your Xbox. If accidently left on, airflow will be restricted in a manner that will likely heat-up the internal components to a problematic level. Needless to say, you’ll also want to make sure you turn off automatic updates through your settings menu. Ultimately, this could randomly power-on your console when you’re not physically there and pose potential issues with overheating.

Which Xbox Series X/S Dust Covers are Best?

As you can see, there are quite a few different options available for dust protection with the Xbox Series X or Series S consoles. While many are quite similar, some are meant for operational use while others fully encase the Xbox and must be removed between each gaming session. That said, we highly recommend combining a full dust cover with fan filters and input plugs for the most advanced dust protection possible.

Use Caution with “Always On” or “Updates”

Before we go, we wanted to give a quick word of advice for anyone interested in Xbox Series X/S dust covers. It’s important to know that if you have your Xbox set to “always on” or “automatic updates” that your console may randomly turn itself on.

This is bad news for dust covers that require removal before playing. Because of this, take a quick look at your settings and make sure it’s correctly configured before you place a physical cover over the entire console. After all, if your console boots up and stays on for an extended period and you’re unaware; it may overheat and cause irreversible damage. You have been warned!
