With the Xbox Series X and S priced at $499 and $299, respectively, Microsoft’s newest consoles are quite expensive. And this price doesn’t even include sales tax, games and all of the necessary accessories. Needless to say, you’re going to want to keep your Series X or Series S console in the best working condition.

While you can spend the end of each day wiping the exterior of your Xbox Series X/S down, the internal components are not as easy to care for. Because of this, taking preventative measures are the best course of action.

Whether you just got your hands on your new console or you’ve had it for several months, you may already realize that there are quite a few openings for dust to get inside. A little bit of dust isn’t that big of deal, but dust that has built-up over time can pose a serious risk. Realistically, it can limit airflow in the already tight environment inside the console. Thus, overheating and performance issues may soon follow.

Choosing the Best Dust Covers, Filters and Plugs for Xbox Series X/S

With all that being said, most gamers are opting for dust covers, filters and plugs that keep your Series X/S console as “new” as possible. A simple dust cover over the entire exterior is one option, but filters for the cooling fans or plugs for the ports are also common solutions.

Recently, we set-out to research, test and determine which options are available for preventing dust-related issues with the Xbox Series X/S. To our liking, there are several options available, but it’s somewhat difficult to render which ones are worthwhile and which should receive a hard-pass.

Today, we’re going to showcase the best currently-available picks. All of the options are affordable, simple and offer a great solution that would otherwise be quite difficult to replicate. Sure, these aren’t necessarily a requirement. However, those who want to prevent dust build-up inside or outside of their console should take note.

We’ll outline the best dust covers, filters and plugs for both the Series X and Series S. In the end, we’ll help you determine which solutions are worthwhile and which might be worth passing up on. Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

Benazcap Series X Top Cover and Dust Filters

Benazcap Series X Top Cover and Dust Filters

For those looking for something a bit different, the Benazcap Series X Top Cover and Dust Filters offer just that. Rather than completely encasing the entire console, it contains a top-cover and two mesh filters for preventing dust and debris intrusion. The top cover is the most unique feature about it. With an assortment of pegs, it’s placed directly into several open holes on the top opening of your Series X console.

Benazcap Series X Top Cover and Dust Filters

Once installed, it holds tightly and completely encloses the top air outtake. When your console is not in use, you’re supposed to keep it shut. When you want to play, simple open up the top cover and use the hinged opening to fold it outward and uncover the top vent. This way, air movement isn’t dampened and you can rest assured knowing that the internal components have unrestricted airflow. Once you’re done playing, simply close it shut so dust and debris doesn’t naturally accumulate while your console isn’t in use.

Benazcap Series X Top Cover and Dust Filters

In addition to this, the Benzacap cover also includes three PVC mesh screens with adhesive backing. These are to be placed on the air intakes located on the back of the Series X console. This, in conjunction with the semi-permanent top cover keep the internal components much more free of dust than they would otherwise be. Best of all, the top cover has a built-in headset stand that retracts in both the open and closed positions. We see it as an added bonus and not a main feature, although it’s definitely nice to have!

Pros

  • Top cover stays installed and flips open while you’re playing Xbox.
  • Sleek black appearance matches the exterior style of the Series X quite well.
  • Includes three mesh screens and a top cover in one kit.
  • Built-in headset stand available in both the open and closed positions.
  • Easy installation that requires no tools or special skills.

Cons

  • Must remember to flip open lid each time you want to play.

  • Use caution if your Xbox is set to “always on”.

BUBM Dust Cover for Xbox Series X

BUBM Dust Cover for Xbox Series X

Similar to the PlayVital, the BUBM Dust Cover for Xbox Series X is another great option. Rather than being made from a stiff nylon material, it’s made from an elastic nylon that provides a snug fit around the exterior of the Series X. Although it’s only available for a vertical orientation, it provides a tighter fit than anything else we’ve seen. In fact, the material is similar to a wetsuit, with elasticity intertwined in every fiber of the material, giving it a soft yet firm wrap around the console.

BUBM Dust Cover for Xbox Series X

Although it’s only available in a vibrant green color, all of the ports, including the USB port and power button on the front are left exposed for easy access. The backside contains a small Velcro strap that keeps it snug around any cables you may have plugged in. While we could have done without the obnoxious “BUBM for the game” logo on the front, it isn’t too big of deal for most people.

BUBM Dust Cover for Xbox Series X

Like other covers that slip over the entire console, the BUBM cover must be removed when you’re playing your Xbox. If accidently left on, airflow will be restricted in a manner that will likely heat-up the internal components to a problematic level. Needless to say, you’ll also want to make sure you turn off automatic updates through your settings menu. Ultimately, this could randomly power-on your console when you’re not physically there and pose potential issues with overheating.

Pros

  • Provides a tight, elastic fit over the exterior.
  • Leaves the front USB port and power button easily accessible.
  • Contains a Velcro strap for securing the backside near the inputs/ports.
  • Affordably priced.
  • Soft material similar to that of a wetsuit.
  • Provides a nice amount of protection against water, dust and UV.

Cons

  • Only available in green.
  • Obnoxious logo on the front.
  • Use caution if your Xbox is set to “always on”.

Which Xbox Series X/S Dust Covers are Best?

As you can see, there are quite a few different options available for dust protection with the Xbox Series X or Series S consoles. While many are quite similar, some are meant for operational use while others fully encase the Xbox and must be removed between each gaming session. That said, we highly recommend combining a full dust cover with fan filters and input plugs for the most advanced dust protection possible.

If you have an Xbox Series X, we recommend going with the PlayVital Black Nylon Dust Cover and the FYOUNG Dust Filter & Plug Kit. This way, your console is protected by the nylon cover when it’s not in use, while the filter and plugs prevent dust once you remove the cover and start playing. Best of all, the PlayVital cover is also available in a horizontal orientation for those who prefer to lay their Series X on its side.

For Series S users, we reccomend using the ECHZOVE Dust Filters and Plugs Kit in conjunction with the PlayVital Black Nylon Dust Cover if you prefer a horizontal-orientation or the Mcbazel Dust Cover for vertically-oriented Series S consoles. The idea here is the same. You’ve got a fully encased cover for leaving your Series S unattended, and the filters and plugs for while you’re playing.

As an alternative for Series X users, the BUBM Dust Cover offers a wetsuit-like solution for protection. It has a tighter fit and doesn’t restrict access to the front USB port or power button. However, like the PlayVital nylon cover, it also must be removed when using the console.

In addition, the Benazcap Series X Top Cover offers a nifty solution that also doubles as a headset stand. Rather than fully removing it, it utilizes a built-in hinge to open/close the top air outtake.

Use Caution with “Always On” or “Updates”

Before we go, we wanted to give a quick word of advice for anyone interested in Xbox Series X/S dust covers. It’s important to know that if you have your Xbox set to “always on” or “automatic updates” that your console may randomly turn itself on.

This is bad news for dust covers that require removal before playing. Because of this, take a quick look at your settings and make sure it’s correctly configured before you place a physical cover over the entire console. After all, if your console boots up and stays on for an extended period and you’re unaware; it may overheat and cause irreversible damage. You have been warned!
