Radiation is both a friend and an enemy of humankind. On the positive side, life itself would be impossible without it. Radiation from the sun gives us warmth, and provides the energy for plants to grow. Radiation also has therapeutic uses. Doctors use radiation for treating cancer, and infrared massage has become a popular form of relaxation. UV light sanitizers, meanwhile, have become a common hygiene aid. We even rely on radiation for our everyday devices. Smartphones, wireless routers, and other online electronics use EMF waves to transmit their data.
With all of that being said, not everything about radiation is good. The sun might be essential for life, but too much of it can give you skin cancer. The same radiation that destroys cancer cells can also kill healthy tissue if it’s not focused correctly. In theory, this isn’t a huge problem with smartphones, since they emit non-ionizing radiation. The wavelengths they’re using aren’t the same kind of radiation that causes cancer or kills cells. Even so, many people find that constant exposure to EMF radiation causes discomfort. This can come in the form of anxiety, aches and pains, and other generalized symptoms. For this reason, a lot of folks use EMF protection to block their phones from their bodies.
An additional concern with smartphones is privacy. When your phone is active, it’s always broadcasting. This leaves you vulnerable to having your location tracked, or even having your signal intercepted. To be fair, this isn’t exactly a common occurrence. Most people will go their entire lives without having their privacy invaded in this way. But if you’re truly concerned about being tracked, EMF protection can be an effective countermeasure.
We’re about to review three different methods of EMF protection for smartphones. We’ll start out with the EMF Harmonizer+ EMF Protection Sticker. This is a simple metal sticker for neutralizing EMF radiation, and it sticks on underneath your phone case. Next, we’ll look at the Aulterra EMF Protection Sticker. This is another metal sticker, but it’s designed for blocking EMF, not just neutralizing it. Finally, we’ll examine the RadiArmor EMF Blocking Cell Phone Sleeve. This is a neoprene smartphone pouch with built-in EMF protection. Which one is the best of the bunch? Let’s look a little closer, and see how they compare!
EMF Harmonizer+ EMF Protection Sticker
The EMF Harmonizer+ EMF Protection Sticker is, by all appearances, a simple metal sticker. It’s grey and silver in color, and has a square shape with rounded corners. At 1.2 inches to a side, it’s small enough to fit on the back of even the smallest smartphones.
It’s also very thin, enough to be slightly flexible when you hold it in your hand. We wouldn’t recommend bending it, though, since you’re liable to damage the inside. That’s because the material is actually layered, with different materials throughout its thickness. You can actually see this on the surface, where the EMF Harmony logo is etched into the surface.
The sticker comes as a single unit, so it’s useful for one phone. If you need to protect more than one phone, you’ll have to buy more than one protector. To use it, simply remove the backing, then stick the protector directly on the back of your phone. The adhesive will remain tacky, so you can freely switch the protector between devices. When you buy a new phone, just peel off the EMF Harmonizer+ and stick it onto your new device. Keep in mind, though, that it’s supposed to work better the closer it is to your phone’s electronics. Make sure to take off your phone case, and put it directly on your phone. It’s so thin that you shouldn’t have any trouble putting your case back on afterwards.
Effectiveness
The EMF Harmonizer+ is designed to work on any smartphone. However, EMF Harmony also recommends it for use with routers or WiFi boosters. Basically, it can be used with any EMF-emitting device where you can stick it on the surface. Then again, we’re not really sure why you would want to do this. A small EMF sticker makes sense for a smartphone, since your EMF protection needs to be more portable. But you don’t carry your wireless router around your house all the time. If you’re concerned about emissions from your router, consider using a router cage instead. Cages aren’t portable, but they’re far more effective. Some will even block your router signal entirely. On the downside, this means you’d have to take the cage off to actually use your internet.
As stated by EMF Harmony, this is an EMF neutralizer, not an EMF blocker. A blocker will entirely block your signal, which is more effective. However, a blocker will also prevent your phone from receiving texts or calls, which is usually undesirable. By using a neutralizer, you can mitigate the negative effects of EMF radiation without sacrificing your smartphone.
EMF neutralizers are a real technology, and they work on the same principle as noise-cancelling headphones. When a neutralizer detects EMF radiation, it produces an inverse wave that cancels out the original wave. The result is what’s called “coherent” radiation, which is not as hard on people with EMF sensitivity. Here’s the problem; this is an un-powered device, which means it has no way to produce its own EMF. We’re not aware of how it’s supposed to work without power, and we have no way of testing it. This makes us concerned that the EMF Harmonizer+ isn’t actually doing anything.
Aulterra EMF Protection Sticker
The Aulterra EMF Protection Sticker is very similar to the EMF Harmonizer+, at least superficially. It’s a metallic sticker, although it’s round instead of square, with a diameter of 1.5 inches. The surface has a rainbow sheen, with alternating smooth and textured stripes. There’s also an etched Celtic love knot overlaid over the stripes, which we assume is a company logo. It looks really sharp on the back of your phone, although it’s meant to be applied under the case.
Like the EMF Harmonizer+, the Aulterra sticker is adhesive, as well as slightly flexible. That said, the adhesive is significantly more powerful, and is meant for a single use only. This means when you get a new phone, you’ll also need a new protector. It also means you’ll have to be careful about application, since you won’t be able to reposition the sticker.
Effectiveness
The Aulterra EMF Protection Sticker is constructed from multiple layers of rare earth minerals. These layers are then sheathed in metal, creating a single, unified piece. The rare earth minerals work similar to a Faraday cage or Faraday cloth, and absorb EMF radiation. We liked this, because it’s a real technology that’s well-understood. It also seems to work reasonably well. There’s a noticeable decrease in EMF intensity when the sticker is in use.
That said, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First off, the effectiveness is limited by the size of the sticker. It’s not going to completely block EMF from reaching your body, only reduce the amount. Another thing to keep in mind is that this protection is highly directional. It’s only going to block the radiation on one side of your phone. If your phone is in your pocket facing the other direction, you’ll still be exposed to some EMF radiation. This isn’t a big deal, though. The idea isn’t to protect you completely, which wouldn’t always be practical. The idea is to reduce your constant, long term exposure that comes from your smartphone.
If you want to do more to reduce your overall EMF exposure, there are other ways to do it. For example, a lot of exposure happens at night, while you’re sleeping. Why not enclose yourself completely with an EMF-shielding bed canopy? It won’t just protect you from EMF radiation. Since it keeps your phone from working inside, it forces you to put your phone down before you lie down.
RadiArmor EMF Blocking Cell Phone Sleeve
The RadiArmor EMF Blocking Cell Phone Sleeve is entirely different from our last two options. Instead of a sticker, this is a neoprene couch that encloses your smartphone entirely. It’s made from black or orange fabric depending on your preferences, and it’s surprisingly soft. You can carry it in your pocket with your phone inside, and it won’t dig into your leg. It’s also surprisingly well put together, with tight double stitching around the edges for added durability. At the top of the case, there’s a flap to cover the top of your phone, with a small velcro closure.
The internal dimensions are fairly large. The RadiArmor case can accommodate even bigger phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10. At 7.1 inches long and 4.15 wide, you don’t have to worry much about capacity. The only time you’ll run into trouble is if you’re using an oversized case, like an Otter Box.
The RadiArmor sleeve works because the back of the material is lined with Faraday cloth. When you look inside, you’ll know which side that is, because it has a gold-colored liner. That’s the side that goes against your body, to keep radiation from getting through. On the back of the case, there’s also a belt loop. The loop is nice and stretchy, and makes it easy to carry on large and small belts alike. As a result, this sleeve can also double as a carrying case.
This EMF protector is covered by RadiArmor’s lifetime manufacturer’s warranty. You’ll get a full refund if it fails due to a factory defect, even if you’ve owned it for years.
Effectiveness
As we mentioned, the RadiArmor EMF sleeve is designed to prevent radiation from passing through the back only. The embedded Faraday fabric blocks 99 percent of all radiation, which is highly effective. Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you’re getting perfect protection. Radiation will still come from the other sides of your phone. So if you were to hold an EMF meter behind the back of the case, you’d see a drop of around 90 percent. Even so, that’s an impressive amount of protection, and it’s something you can actually measure. That’s a lot better than relying on dubious manufacturer claims.
This sleeve is designed so that your phone won’t lose its connection when it’s inside. That way, you can continue to receive calls and texts while you protect yourself. Another thing to remember is that the case doesn’t do anything when your phone isn’t inside. During a phone call, you’ll be entirely unprotected.
Final Verdict
So, which one of these EMF smartphone protectors is the best to meet your needs? Let’s go over what we’ve learned. The EMF Harmonizer+ EMF Protection Sticker is easy to use and apply. It can be switched to new phones as needed, and it’s generally unobtrusive. On the downside, EMF Harmony fails to provide any adequate explanation for how it actually works. Since it’s meant to normalize EMF and not block it, we have no way of gauging its effectiveness.
Next, we looked at the Aulterra EMF Protection Sticker. This is a no-nonsense metallic sticker that effectively blocks EMF radiation on one side of your phone. It keeps you safe while your phone is in your pocket, while still leaving you free to accept calls and texts. The only thing we didn’t like is that it can’t be reused. When you buy a new phone, you’ll have to buy a new EMF protector.
The RadiArmor EMF Blocking Cell Phone Sleeve is a pouch, not a sticker. Because of this, it’s a bit more cumbersome to carry around. That said, it’s the most effective option of the three. EMF-blocking fabric in one side of the pouch keeps EMF radiation from broadcasting towards your body. The other side of the pouch, meanwhile, still allows a signal to penetrate. If you don’t mind keeping your phone in a pouch, this is the ideal choice.
