Removing snot and debris from your baby’s nose can be cumbersome or downright difficult. Especially if you’re using a typical “bulb” nasal syringe that have been commonplace for many decades. Simply put, they don’t always work that well.
Recently, I found out about a new product that’s supposed to make life a lot easier for removing boogers from deep within any nasal cavity. The Grownsy Nasal Aspirator is precisely what I’m referring to.
Rather than rely on a rubber bulb, the Grownsy is a battery-powered device that works like a tiny little vacuum to suck-out anything within. I’ve spent the past month using it on my 6-month old and I’m here to report on my experience using it. Let’s get right into it.
What I Liked
Super Simple Operation
Using the Grownsy nasal aspirator is very straightforward. All you need to do is select a tip, turn it on, and insert into your baby’s nose. There’s really no guesswork involved, and everything is very obvious.
You can easily adjust the suction power by selecting low, medium, or high, and get deep within their nose without much discomfort. I find the tips to be much softer and more pliable than that of a standard nose bulb. Overall, I would say it’s a much more comfortable experience for your baby.
Very Effective
I found the Grownsy nasal aspirator to be much more effective than anything else I’ve tried in the past. It reaches far within the nose, but not too far as to cause any pain. Sure, your baby might whine or cry a little, but this is typically always the case when you’re shoving anything into any of their orifices’.
Even on the lowest setting, it seems to reach into the nasal cavity and suck-out most boogers with ease. The suction is powerful enough to clean-out even the snottiest of noses and leave nothing behind. In fact, since owning the Grownsy, I haven’t once felt like I needed the standard nose bulb that I used to use.
Easy to Clean
The clear parts that are inserted into the nose are all very easy to disassemble. At first, it might not be totally obvious, but simply twist them off and place them in either a steam sterilizer or hand wash them with some light soap. Rinsing them is usually sufficient, as I’ve found that the boogers are never too stuck and come off with a simple bit of water. Plus, all of the parts are easy to put back together, especially after you’ve done it a few times.
Built-in Sound Machine and Light
A cool bonus feature of the Grownsy nasal aspirator is the built-in sound machine and light. On the front panel, directly below the power button, you’ll find a lightbulb and music icon button. Press these to enable a gentle lullaby or a glowing blue light.
While there’s only one lullaby to pick from, I found that my baby enjoyed a little melody to keep him distracted from the booger sucking action. It’s a great addition that truly helps aid your child’s comfort without much effort from you. Typically, I always enable to sound machine feature before diving into the nose.
The light is another cool feature. It’s great to use when you’re caring for them in the middle of the night and don’t want to turn on a bright overhead light. It illuminates directly towards their nose and does a great job at that. Plus, it’s not too bright, but not too dim.
Excellent Battery Life
I really appreciate how the Grownsy nasal aspirator is able to be charged via USB-C. This is the modern standard for portable devices, so the inclusion of USB-C means it’s easy to charge however you’d like. It does come included with a USB-C cable, but the freedom of the technology means that you can utilize virtually any other USB-C cable to charge it.
In terms of battery life, I found that it offers around 3-4 hours of consistent use before you need to charge it up again. And charging only takes around an hour, which is a definite plus!
Storage Case
Another nice bonus is the inclusion of a storage case. It’s made of a hard plastic and has a molded shape to fit the aspirator and all accessories with ease. It’s a perfect fit that makes it easy to carrying along or toss in your baby bag.
What I Didn’t Like
Not for Very Hard Boogers
I found the Grownsy nasal aspirator to work best with loose mucus and boogers rather than very hard ones. If boogers are very hard, they’ll often either clog up the tip or simply be unable to be removed. The good news is, however, that more often than not, the hard boogers will get clogged rather than become unremovable.
Slightly Loud
I’ll be totally honest – it is definitely a bit loud, especially when you’re using the strongest suction setting. It’s not a huge deal for most instances, but it can be alarming to an infant or baby when using it in the middle of the night. The good news is that the built-in sound machine does a decent job at combatting this, but not totally silencing it.
Final Thoughts
All in all, I must say that I do indeed like the Grownsy nasal aspirator. It’s easy to use, quite practical, and does a good job at removing all sorts of mucus, in most scenarios. Sure, it may struggle with hard boogers, but it typically at least loosens them up, which is beneficial in its own.
If you’re looking for an alternative to a standard nose bulb or manual nasal aspirator, the Grownsy nasal aspirator offers the perfect option. Best of all, it’s actually decently affordable and priced fairly.
