A straightforward process — here’s how to leave on every platform
Being added to a Facebook group chat you don’t want to be in — or simply wanting to leave one you’ve been part of — has a simple solution on every platform.
You can leave any group chat you’re in, and the process takes about ten seconds. Here’s exactly how to do it on desktop, iPhone, and Android, plus what happens when you leave.
What Happens When You Leave
Before leaving, it’s worth knowing what the exit looks like to others.
When you leave a group chat, the other participants see a notification in the conversation that you left. Your previous messages remain visible in the chat — leaving doesn’t delete your message history for other participants. You stop receiving new messages from the group immediately after leaving.
If someone adds you back to the group after you leave, you’ll start receiving messages again from that point — you can leave again if you don’t want to be there.
You cannot silently leave a Facebook group chat without others seeing the notification. This is a Facebook design choice and there’s no workaround that prevents the notification from appearing.
Leave on Desktop (Browser)
Go to facebook.com and click the Messenger icon in the top right — the speech bubble. Find the group chat in your conversation list and open it.
At the top right of the conversation, click the information icon (a circle with an i) or the gear/settings icon depending on your Facebook version. Look for Leave Chat or Leave Group in the options that appear.
Click Leave Chat and confirm when prompted. You’re removed from the conversation immediately.
Alternatively, hover over the group chat in your conversation list without opening it. Click the three dots that appear and look for Leave Chat in the dropdown menu.
Leave on iPhone
Open the Facebook app and tap the Messenger icon or open the Messenger app if you use it separately.
Find the group chat and tap to open it. Tap the group name or the information icon at the top of the conversation. This opens the group chat details panel.
Scroll down until you see Leave Chat or Leave Group. Tap it and confirm. You’re removed immediately.
Leave on Android
Open the Facebook app or Messenger app and find the group chat.
Tap the group name at the top of the conversation to open the chat details. Scroll down to find Leave Chat and tap it. Confirm the action when prompted.
If You Can’t Find the Leave Option
On some versions of the Facebook or Messenger app, the Leave Chat option is accessed slightly differently.
Try tapping and holding the group chat in your conversation list. A context menu should appear with options including Leave Chat.
Alternatively, open the chat, tap the group name at the top, and look for a Members section. Some versions of the interface put Leave Chat at the bottom of the members list rather than in the main chat settings.
If you’re using Messenger.com rather than Facebook.com, the process is the same — open the conversation, click the group name or information icon, and find Leave Chat in the settings panel.
Mute Instead of Leave
If you don’t want to leave the chat but want to stop being notified, muting is a middle ground.
In the same chat settings panel where you’d find Leave Chat, look for Mute Notifications or Ignore Messages. Muting stops notification alerts while keeping you in the chat. Ignore Messages is a stronger option that moves the conversation to a filtered inbox so you don’t see it without leaving.
This is useful when leaving would be socially awkward — a family group chat, a work chat — but you don’t want constant notifications.
Preventing Being Added Back
After leaving, anyone in the chat can re-add you — Facebook group chats don’t have a setting that prevents this. If you’re being repeatedly added to a chat you don’t want to be in, the most direct solution is blocking the person who keeps adding you.
Go to their profile, click the three dots, and select Block. Blocked users can’t add you to group chats. Note that blocking has broader effects — they can’t see your profile or contact you in other ways either.
A Quick Reference
| Platform | Steps |
|---|---|
| Desktop | Messenger icon → open chat → information icon → Leave Chat |
| iPhone | Facebook or Messenger app → open chat → group name → Leave Chat |
| Android | Facebook or Messenger app → open chat → group name → Leave Chat |
The Bottom Line
Leaving a Facebook group chat takes about ten seconds on any platform — open the chat, tap or click the group name or information icon, and select Leave Chat. The other participants see a notification that you left, your past messages stay visible to them, and you stop receiving new messages immediately.
If leaving feels too final or socially complicated, muting or using Ignore Messages keeps you technically in the chat without the notifications.
You can leave any Facebook group chat — the only thing you can’t control is the notification it sends to everyone else when you do.
