Mom always told you to take your vitamins. But when mom’s not there to remind you, how do you remember to take your daily pills? If you’re just taking a single dose in the morning or evening, it’s easy enough to work into your routine. You just take your pills with breakfast, or right after dinner. But there are other situations where you could be taking, three, or more doses per day. At that point, you need to be a bit more precise about your timing. If you’re supposed to be taking a pill every four hours, taking it after three or five hours isn’t good enough.

Things get even more complicated when you’re taking multiple medications. If you’re taking different pills on different, overlapping schedules, it can be difficult to keep track of. Do you take two orange pills at one o’clock, or one blue pill at two o’clock? At the very least, you’ll need a detailed, hand-written schedule. It also helps to have a good alarm clock to let you know when it’s time to take your pills. But what if there was a tool specifically designed to help you keep track of your medications and supplements? What if that tool was a simple smartphone app that you could install for free?

AUVON app

That’s what we’re about to be talking about today. We’re going to take a close look at the AUVON Pill & Medication Reminder App. AUVON is a newer company that focuses on bringing technology into everyday wellness. They’ve produced a number of apps and useful tools, for everything from diabetes monitoring to pill organizers. This particular app is designed to remind you when it’s time to take a medication or vitamin. You get an audible alarm, along with written instructions, and even a picture of the pill. But how easy is it to use, and how safe is your data? Is the interface clean and simple, or is it cluttered with ads like a lot of free apps? To find out, we had to give the app a try. Here’s what we discovered.

Design & Interface

As with any smartphone app, the AUVON Pill & Medication Reminder App needs to be installed. Thankfully, it’s free on iOS and Android, so head on over to the Apple Store or Google Play. The app will run on pretty much any modern smartphone or tablet. On Android systems, it will run on phones, tablets, or Chromebooks running Android 5.0 and up. On iPhones and iPads, you’ll need to have iOS 10.0 or later. Have a MacBook? You’ll need to be running macOS 11.0 or later, and you’ll also need an Apple M1 chip.

Once the app is installed, you’ll set up a profile, after which you’ll have access to the reminder interface. This is the heart of the AUVON app, and it’s where you’ll spend most of your time. Here, you’ll set individual reminders for each of your medications or vitamins. First and foremost, you’ll enter the name, which is what you’ll see first when a reminder appears. Within each reminder, you’ll be able to specify the quantity, such as one, two, and so on. You’ll also be able to adjust the unit type (capsule, tablet, etc). Along with the amount, you’ll be able to enter the time of day.

When you create a reminder, you’ll be prompted to upload a photo of your vitamin or medication. This is optional, but it’s highly recommended. The more pills you take, the harder it can be to keep track, and a picture can make it easy to remember. When you take your picture, make sure to capture enough detail to be useful. For example, suppose two of your prescriptions are both round, white, chalky pills. In that case, it could help to take a close-up picture of the stamp.

You can set as many reminders as you like, for as many pills as you like. One thing we liked is that you can set reminders to repeat as many times as you want. For example, let’s say you need to take two pills every four hours, starting at 8 AM. You would create the initial alert for 8 AM. You would then set that alert to repeat at 12 PM, 4 PM, 8 PM, and so on. That way, you don’t have to keep re-entering the same information multiple times. This makes it quick and painless to set up multiple reminders in a short period of time.

Once reminders have been created, you can freely edit them and delete them as needed. If your dosage changes or you no longer need a medication, you can make that change with ease. The same is true if your medication changes appearance. You can simply edit the photo, and upload a new one.

Tracking and Timing

So, what happens after you’ve set up your reminders? Simply put, the alarm is going to go off as scheduled. It’s a pleasant chime, like a softened version of an old-school mechanical phone bell. When your phone is set to vibrate, the alert will be set to vibrate, too. That way, you don’t have to worry about it interrupting a meeting or a movie. When the alert goes off, you’ll see a visual notification on your smartphone screen. Tap the alert, and you’ll see three options: confirm, snooze, and skip. Clicking the confirm button will indicate that you’ve taken your dose. This will be reflected in the app, and you’ll have a record that the dose was taken.

When you tap the snooze button, the dose will not be recorded. Instead, you’ll receive another alert in a few minutes. This is great if you’re out in your garden, or working in your basement. You can go get your pills, take them, and confirm the reminder when it reappears. At that point, the dose will be marked as taken in your records.

The skip button is a last resort button if you’re going to miss your dose. Maybe you went out for the day, and you forgot to take your medication with you. In that case, you could hit the skip button, and you won’t keep getting reminders. Instead, the record will indicate that you missed your dose. When you’re going through your records, you’ll easily be able to see where you went off track.

There are also a couple of other options inside the app, which you should be aware of. The first is the ability to confirm a dose a head of time. This isn’t always a good idea, if your pills need to be taken on a strict schedule. But let’s say you have a single daily dose that can be taken at any time. It’s scheduled for noon, but you take it at six in the morning because you’re going out for the whole day. You can go into your reminders, select that one, and confirm it in advance. That way, the record will show that your dose has been taken. When noon rolls around, you won’t have to deal with any alerts.

The other option you’ll have is the ability to track your pill inventory. When you first create a reminder, you’ll be able to enter how many pills you have. Whenever a dose is recorded, the appropriate number of pills or capsules are deducted from your inventory. You can also set alerts for low inventory. For example, you could set the app to remind you when you’ve got 10 pills left. That way, you can refill your prescription, or buy more off the shelf depending on the medication. Just make sure to update your inventory in the app once you’ve topped it off in real life.

Privacy and Other Features

One of the most attractive features of the AUVON Pill & Medication Reminder App is that it’s free. There’s no charge to download the app, and there’s no subscription fee. Furthermore, none of the features are unlocked via microtransactions. You don’t pay a single penny, and you get access to all the app’s features.

Most free apps monetize themselves by running ads. You get popups every couple of minutes, and you have to watch videos periodically. So you end up with a really powerful app that’s a headache to use. The AUVON app is 100 percent ad-free. You can use it as much as you like, without encountering a single popup or video.

Another way for apps to monetize is to sell your personal information. Depending on what you’re doing, you might not particularly mind. For instance, you probably don’t care if a free gardening app is tracking your watering habits. But vitamins and medication are a little more deeply personal. If you’re taking medication for a serious condition, you might not want the whole world to know. Thankfully, AUVON doesn’t sell any of your information to third parties.

The reason this app is free has nothing to do with making money from the app itself. Instead, AUVON offers it as a free companion for the AUVON Pill Organizer (pictured above). Within the app, there’s a visual element where your pills are sorted into a colored plastic organizer. Well, this is the organizer, with the exact same colors and configuration. So if you want to get the most out of the app’s visual elements, you’ll want the organizer. But the app works just fine with regular prescription bottles and vitamin jars.

Final Verdict

The AUVON Pill & Medication Reminder App, available for Apple Devices or Android Devices, is a powerful tool for keeping track of all your meds. Whether you’re on a lot of prescription medication or you’re taking a lot of supplements, there are features for everyone. The photo feature is particularly useful, since you can identify your pills visually. We also liked the way you can confirm your doses early, or skip a dose as needed. These features help make inventory tracking a breeze, so you’ll never run out of your important pills.
