A notification setting — here’s exactly where to find it on every platform

Facebook birthday notifications — the daily alerts telling you it’s someone’s birthday, the reminders to post on their timeline, the morning roundup of whose birthday it is today — are useful to some people and noise to others.

Turning them off is a settings change, but the location differs slightly between desktop and mobile. Here’s exactly where to find it.

Turn Off Birthday Notifications on Desktop

Go to facebook.com and click the bell icon in the top right corner to open your notifications panel. At the top right of the notifications panel, click the Settings icon (a small gear or three dots depending on your Facebook version).

Select Notification Settings or Edit Notification Settings. This opens the full notifications settings page.

Scroll down through the notification categories until you find Birthdays. Click on it to expand the options. You’ll see toggles for birthday-related notifications — turn them off.

Alternatively, go directly through Settings → Notifications in the main Facebook settings menu. Navigate to the Birthdays category and disable the notifications there.

Turn Off Birthday Notifications on iPhone

Open the Facebook app and tap the bell icon at the bottom of the screen or the notifications tab. Tap the Settings icon or three dots in the top right of the notifications screen.

Select Notification Settings. Scroll through the categories to find Birthdays and toggle the notifications off.

If you can’t find it through the notifications panel, go to the main menu (three lines), tap Settings and Privacy → Settings → Notifications → Birthdays and turn them off from there.

Turn Off Birthday Notifications on Android

Open the Facebook app and tap the bell icon for notifications. Tap the gear icon or three dots to access notification settings.

Find Birthdays in the category list and disable the notifications. As with iPhone, you can also reach this through Menu → Settings and Privacy → Settings → Notifications → Birthdays.

Turn Off Phone-Level Notifications

The steps above control Facebook’s in-app notifications — the alerts that appear inside Facebook when you open it. If you’re also receiving push notifications to your phone’s lock screen or notification bar about birthdays, those are controlled at the device level.

On iPhone: Go to Settings → Notifications → Facebook and adjust which notification types Facebook can send to your lock screen, notification center, and banners. You can turn off all Facebook push notifications here or allow only certain types through.

On Android: Go to Settings → Apps → Facebook → Notifications and manage which Facebook notification categories can send push alerts to your device. Some Android versions let you disable specific notification channels — look for a Birthdays channel specifically.

Remove Birthdays From Your Facebook Calendar

If birthday events are appearing in a connected calendar — Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook — Facebook’s birthday calendar sync is the cause. This is separate from in-app notifications and requires a different fix.

On desktop, go to facebook.com/events and find the Birthdays calendar. Look for an option to unsubscribe from the birthday calendar or remove the calendar link from your connected calendar apps. In your calendar application, remove the Facebook Birthdays subscription from the list of subscribed calendars.

Hide Your Own Birthday From Others

If your goal is stopping people from getting notified about your birthday rather than stopping notifications about other people’s birthdays, that’s a privacy setting on your profile rather than a notification setting.

Go to your profile → Edit Profile → Basic Info and find your birthday. You can set the audience for your birthday to Only Me, which prevents Facebook from showing your birthday to others and stops the birthday notification from being sent to your friends.

The Bottom Line

Turning off Facebook birthday notifications is a straightforward settings change in the notifications section of Facebook on any platform. The notification settings panel — accessible through the bell icon — is where to start on desktop, iPhone, and Android alike.

If birthday alerts are also appearing as push notifications on your phone or as calendar events, those require separate adjustments at the device settings level and through your calendar app respectively.

Facebook birthday notifications are on by default because they drive engagement — turning them off takes thirty seconds and they stop immediately.
