Why Is There No Sound on My Facebook Reels?

Almost always a mute setting or device issue — here’s what’s causing it and how to fix it

Watching a Facebook Reel and getting no sound — the video plays normally but in complete silence — is frustrating and has several specific causes.

The fix is almost always quick once you know where to look.

Here’s what’s causing the silence and how to restore audio.

The Reel Is Muted

This is the most common cause by a significant margin. Facebook Reels mute automatically when they autoplay in the feed, and that mute state often persists even when you tap directly on a Reel to watch it.

On mobile: Look for a speaker icon in the corner of the Reel — usually the bottom left or top right depending on your Facebook app version. If the icon shows a muted speaker (a speaker with a line through it or an X), tap it once to unmute. Sound should start immediately.

On desktop: The same speaker icon appears on the Reel player. Click it to toggle sound on.

This single tap fixes the problem for the majority of people experiencing silent Reels. The mute state carries across videos in the feed and isn’t always obvious — particularly because the Reel appears to be playing normally in every other way.

Your Phone’s Physical Mute Switch

On iPhone specifically, the physical mute switch on the left side of the phone silences many media apps including Facebook. Even if your ringer volume is separate from media volume in your expectations, Facebook Reels sometimes respect the mute switch in ways that other video apps don’t.

Flip the mute switch on the side of your iPhone to the unmuted position — the switch should not show the orange indicator. Test whether Reels now play with sound.

This is one of the most commonly overlooked causes for iPhone users experiencing silent Facebook Reels specifically.

Device Volume Is Too Low or Muted

Before going into app settings, check the basics. Your phone’s media volume may be turned all the way down even if ringer volume is set normally — on both iPhone and Android, ringer and media volumes are separate.

Press the volume up button on the side of your phone while a Reel is playing. This specifically raises media volume rather than ringer volume when media is active. If the volume was set to zero or near zero, this immediately restores sound.

On Android, go to Settings → Sound → Media Volume and confirm it’s set above zero. On iPhone, the volume buttons while media is playing control media volume directly.

The Reel’s Original Audio Was Removed

Facebook removes audio from Reels when the content violates copyright or community standards related to audio. A Reel that had music or audio when originally posted may appear silent if Facebook’s content detection system flagged and removed the audio track after upload.

When this happens, the Reel plays as a silent video with no indication in the player that audio was removed — it simply plays without sound. No amount of unmuting fixes this because the audio file no longer exists in the post.

This is common with Reels using popular music or audio that wasn’t cleared for use. If a specific Reel is silent while others have sound, this is likely the cause for that particular video.

Facebook App Needs to Be Updated

Outdated Facebook app versions have known audio playback bugs — particularly around Reels which Facebook updates frequently. Audio issues that appear in older versions are often patched in subsequent app updates.

Check the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) for pending Facebook updates and install them. After updating, restart the app completely and test Reels audio.

Clear the Facebook App Cache

Corrupted cached data in the Facebook app causes audio playback failures — the app tries to load cached audio data that’s become corrupted and fails silently.

On Android: Go to Settings → Apps → Facebook → Storage → Clear Cache. This removes temporary files without deleting your account data or login.

On iPhone: iOS doesn’t support per-app cache clearing directly. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Facebook → Offload App and then reinstall from the App Store. Your account data is preserved through the reinstall.

After clearing the cache, reopen Facebook and test whether Reels play with sound.

Check Facebook’s In-App Sound Settings

Facebook has its own internal sound settings that control whether videos play with sound in the feed. These are separate from your device volume and separate from the in-video mute button.

Open the Facebook app and go to Menu → Settings and Privacy → Settings. Look for Media or Videos and Photos in the settings list. Find any settings related to video sound or autoplay and make sure sound isn’t disabled at the app level.

On some Facebook versions, this setting is labeled Videos Start With Sound — make sure it’s enabled if present.

Bluetooth Audio Routing Issues

If you have Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker connected to your phone, audio may be routing to that device rather than your phone’s speakers — and if the Bluetooth device is off, out of range, or in a low-power state, the audio goes nowhere and Reels appear silent.

Check whether any Bluetooth device is connected. Go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings and either connect the device properly or disconnect it entirely so audio routes back to the phone’s built-in speaker. Then test Reels again.

This is a particularly common cause when you’ve recently used wireless headphones and then put them away without explicitly disconnecting them.

Do Not Disturb or Focus Mode

On iPhone, Do Not Disturb and Focus modes can silence media audio in some configurations — particularly if the Focus mode was set up to mute all sounds.

Check whether Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode is active by looking at the status bar or Control Center. If active, disable it temporarily and test whether Reels sound returns.

On Android, similar quiet or Do Not Disturb modes can affect media audio depending on how they were configured.

The Facebook App Has a System-Level Audio Permission Issue

On some Android devices, Facebook’s audio permission can become restricted after an OS update or a permissions reset. If Facebook doesn’t have permission to play audio through the media audio channel, Reels play silently.

Go to Settings → Apps → Facebook → Permissions and check what permissions are granted. While audio playback permissions aren’t listed the same way as microphone permissions, some Android skins and manufacturer overlays include media-related permissions that can be restricted.

Also check Settings → Sound for any app-specific sound restrictions on Samsung, Xiaomi, or other Android devices with custom interfaces.

Try the Facebook Website Instead of the App

If Reels are consistently silent in the Facebook app, try accessing Facebook through your phone’s browser or on a desktop computer at facebook.com. If Reels have sound on the website but not in the app, the issue is app-specific and a reinstall is the most reliable fix.

On desktop, also check that your browser hasn’t muted Facebook specifically. In Chrome, click the padlock icon next to facebook.com in the address bar and check the Sound setting — it should be set to Allow rather than Mute.

Reinstall the Facebook App

If nothing else has resolved silent Reels, a clean reinstall of the Facebook app eliminates any corrupted installation files or settings that survived a cache clear.

Uninstall Facebook from your device. Download and reinstall it fresh from the App Store or Google Play. Log back in and test whether Reels now play with sound. A fresh installation resolves audio issues caused by corrupted app data that clearing the cache alone doesn’t fix.

A Quick Checklist

Work through these in order:

  • Tap the speaker/mute icon in the Reel player — unmute if active
  • Check iPhone mute switch — flip to unmuted position if showing orange
  • Press volume up while a Reel is playing to raise media volume
  • Check Bluetooth connections — disconnect any audio devices not in use
  • Check Do Not Disturb or Focus mode — disable if active
  • Check Facebook app sound settings in Settings and Privacy → Media
  • Update the Facebook app to the latest version
  • Clear the Facebook app cache on Android or offload and reinstall on iPhone
  • Test in a browser to confirm whether it’s app-specific
  • Reinstall Facebook if nothing else resolves it

The Bottom Line

Silent Facebook Reels is almost always the in-player mute button being active, the iPhone mute switch being on, or media volume being at zero. The mute icon tap, the mute switch check, and the volume button together resolve the vast majority of cases in under thirty seconds.

For persistent silence that survives those checks, the app cache clear and reinstall handle most remaining causes. Audio removed by Facebook’s copyright detection system is the one scenario with no fix — that audio is gone from the specific Reel permanently.

Facebook mutes Reels by default in the feed — the speaker icon in the corner is almost always the entire answer.
