Losing access to your Gmail account — whether you forgot your password, got locked out, had your account compromised, or simply can’t get past a verification step — is one of the more stressful things that can happen to someone who relies on email.

Google provides multiple recovery paths, and which one works depends on what information you have available and what caused the lockout. Here’s every recovery method organized by situation.


Start Here: Google’s Account Recovery Page

Every Gmail recovery attempt should start at the same place:

Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery in any browser. Enter your Gmail address and click Next. Google walks you through the available recovery options based on what’s associated with your account.

The more recovery information you have, the more options Google presents. Work through every option Google offers before concluding that automated recovery won’t work — the order in which options appear varies by account and Google sometimes presents options you wouldn’t expect.


You Forgot Your Password

This is the most straightforward recovery scenario and the one Google’s automated system handles best.

Go to the recovery page, enter your email address, and click Forgot Password when prompted for a password. Google presents verification options in order of reliability:

A verification code sent to your recovery phone number. If you have a phone number on your account, Google texts a six-digit code. Enter it and you can set a new password immediately. This is the fastest recovery path available.

A verification code sent to your recovery email address. If you have a secondary email on your account, Google sends a code there. Check that inbox — including spam — and enter the code.

A prompt sent to a trusted device. If you’ve previously signed into Gmail on a phone or tablet, Google can send a sign-in prompt to that device. Check the device for a notification asking “Are you trying to sign in?” and tap Yes.

Answering a security question. If you set one up, Google may ask it as a fallback verification method.

Entering a previously used password. Google sometimes asks if you remember a password you used before — even an old one. If you remember any previous password for the account, try it.

Work through every option presented. If one fails, go back and try the next one.


You Have No Recovery Phone or Email

This is the harder scenario — accounts without recovery information are significantly more difficult to regain access to because Google has fewer ways to verify your identity.

At the recovery page, after exhausting the standard options, Google may present an option to verify your identity another way or send a code to a trusted device. If you’ve ever signed into the account on a phone or computer that you still have access to, try signing in on that device — Google sometimes recognizes the device and grants access or sends a verification prompt.

Answer identity verification questions as accurately as possible. Google may ask:

  • When you created the account
  • The last password you remember using
  • Frequently contacted email addresses
  • Recently accessed apps or services connected to the account

Google uses these answers together to assess whether you’re likely the account owner — no single answer is a pass/fail test. Answer everything as accurately as you can.

Be specific with dates. If Google asks when you created the account, try to recall the actual month and year rather than guessing broadly. Check your memory for context clues — what were you using the account for? What events in your life coincided with creating it?


Your Account Was Hacked or Compromised

If someone else accessed your account, the recovery process has an additional step beyond just regaining access — you need to secure the account after getting back in.

First, attempt standard recovery. Go to the recovery page and use your phone number, recovery email, or trusted device as described above. If the hacker changed your recovery information, these may no longer work — in that case, proceed to the identity verification approach.

After regaining access, act immediately:

Go to myaccount.google.com/security. Review Recent Security Activity for any changes you didn’t make — recovery email changes, phone number changes, connected app additions, or password changes.

Go to Security → Your Devices and remove any devices you don’t recognize.

Go to Security → Third-Party Apps With Account Access and revoke access for any apps you don’t recognize.

Change your password to something strong and unique — at least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.

Enable two-factor authentication if it wasn’t already on. Go to Security → 2-Step Verification and set it up. An authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy) is more secure than SMS verification.

Check your Gmail settings for any changes the hacker may have made:

Go to Settings → See All Settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP and check whether email forwarding to an unknown address was set up. Disable any forwarding you didn’t create.

Go to Settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses and look for any filters that automatically delete or forward emails. Remove anything suspicious.


Your Account Was Disabled or Suspended by Google

Google disables accounts for policy violations — spam, phishing, abuse, or content that violates Google’s terms of service. Disabled accounts show a message when you try to log in explaining that the account has been disabled.

Google sends a notification to any recovery email or phone number explaining why the account was disabled. Check these for context.

To appeal a disabled account:

Go to accounts.google.com/signin/disabled and follow the appeal process. Explain your situation clearly and honestly. If you believe the account was disabled by mistake or if you can demonstrate that violations were inadvertent, state that clearly in the appeal.

Google reviews appeals and typically responds within a few days. The outcome depends on the severity of the violation and whether the appeal is convincing. Not all disabled accounts can be restored — accounts disabled for serious or repeated violations may be permanently closed.


You No Longer Have Access to Your Recovery Phone Number

This is one of the most common recovery obstacles — the phone number on the account was a previous number you no longer have, or the SIM was lost or changed.

At the recovery page, try the other verification options first — recovery email and trusted devices. If those don’t work, use the identity verification approach described above.

After recovering the account, immediately update your recovery phone number to your current one. Also add a recovery email address if you don’t have one. Having both significantly reduces the risk of getting locked out again.


You Can’t Get Past Two-Factor Authentication

If 2FA is blocking your access and you don’t have your second factor available, Google provides backup options.

Try backup codes. When you set up 2FA, Google generates eight-digit backup codes. If you saved these — in a notes app, printed out, stored in a password manager — you can use one to bypass the 2FA requirement. Each code works once.

Try a different second factor. If your account has multiple 2FA methods set up — SMS plus an authenticator app, for example — try the one you do have access to.

Use a trusted device. If you’ve signed into Google on a device that you still have physical access to, Google may allow you to approve the sign-in from that device without needing the 2FA code.

Request a backup code from Google. In the 2FA verification screen, look for options like Try Another Way or More Options. Google may offer to send a verification code to your recovery email or phone, or may ask identity verification questions.

If none of these work, you may need to go through Google’s standard account recovery process which takes several days for identity verification.


You’re Locked Out Due to Suspicious Activity

Google sometimes locks accounts proactively when it detects what looks like unauthorized access — a login from an unusual location, too many failed sign-in attempts, or a pattern of activity that triggers security systems.

In this case Google usually contacts your recovery email or phone with instructions to verify your identity and unlock the account. Follow those instructions.

If you can’t access the recovery contact, use the account recovery page and work through the identity verification options. Explain in any text fields that you believe you were locked out due to a false positive on Google’s security system rather than a genuine compromise.


Recovering a Deleted Gmail Account

If you deleted your Gmail account — either intentionally or by having it deleted for inactivity — recovery is only possible within a limited window.

Google provides a grace period of approximately 20 days after account deletion during which recovery is possible through the standard recovery page. After this window the account and all its data are permanently gone and cannot be recovered.

Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery, enter your deleted email address, and follow the recovery steps. If the account is within the recovery window, Google will walk you through restoring it.

If the account was deleted due to inactivity — Google periodically deletes accounts inactive for two or more years — the recovery window applies the same way. Act quickly if you realize a long-dormant account was deleted.

Google Workspace users (work and school accounts) have dedicated support channels and better options for identity verification and manual account recovery. Contact your Workspace administrator first — they can often reset your access through the admin console without needing to go through Google directly.

Improve Your Recovery Setup After Getting Back In

The best time to prevent future lockouts is immediately after recovering access. Spend five minutes on these steps:

Add or update your recovery phone number. Go to myaccount.google.com/security → Ways We Can Verify It’s You → Recovery Phone. Add your current number.

Add or update your recovery email. Go to the same page and add a non-Gmail recovery email address — a different email provider ensures you can receive recovery codes even if something happens to your Google account.
