As the latest and greatest tablet to hit the market, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 is in many regards, a powerhouse. It’s available as the standard S8 with an 11-inch display, the S8+ with a 12.4-inch display or the S8 Ultra with a massive 14.6-inch display. Needless to say, we think it’s better than any iPad or let-alone, any tablet currently available.

For as enticing as it is, there may be times when you may want to turn it off. Regardless of your specific reasoning, turning off the Tab S8 is simple, yet somewhat contrived by default. Although it’s actually fairly easy, turning it off may not be clearly obvious.

Using Quick Settings to Turn Off Galaxy Tab S8

The most simple way to turn off a Galaxy Tab S8 is to do so from the Quick Settings panel. Although it involves a few steps, this is the easiest method that works by default.

1. Go to the home screen.

2. Swipe down on the Home Screen and the Notification Shade will drop down.

3. Swipe down one more time. The Quick Settings panel will drop down.

4. Press the icon for the Power Icon located in the top right corner.

5. Select whether you’d like to Power Off or Restart your Tab S8.

Enabling the “Side Key” Power Button

If you’ve owned a Samsung tablet or smartphone in the past, you may be used to simply pressing the standalone button on the side of the device, located directly above the volume buttons. This is known as the side key.

For the Galaxy Tab S8 and other recent Samsung devices, they’ve gotten rid of this button’s functionality for powering off. Instead, when you press it, Bixby turns on. If you’re like most, you probably think this is quite annoying.

Unfortunately, Samsung does this by default. Luckily, there’s actually a way to change the function of this button so when you press and hold it, the Galaxy Tab S8 will turn off. Re-enabling the power button is actually quite easy. Here are the steps you need to complete to get a working, physical power button.

1. Go to the home screen.

2. Swipe down on the Home Screen and the Notification Shade will drop down.

3. Press the Gear Icon to access the Settings Menu.

4. In the left column, scroll down until you see Advanced Features and press it.

5. In the right column, press Side Key

6. Below the Press and Hold section, press Power Off Menu.

7. Exit the settings menu and go back to your home screen.

8. Press and hold the Side Key and now, the Power Off and Restart options will now appear instead of Bixby.

Keep in mind, however, that now when you press the Side Key, Bixby will no longer pop up and say “Hi, I’m Bixby.” If for any reason you’d like to re-activate Bixby, simply reverse the previous steps. Conveniently, you can also access the Side Key Settings at the bottom of the screen when the Power Off or Restart menu appears.

As an alternate method to turning off your Galaxy Tab S8, you can opt to keep the Side Key button’s default functionality. Doing so, you can press this side button and verbally say, “Turn off my tablet.”

Conclusion

As you can see, there are quite a few different ways to turn off your Galaxy Tab S8. While each method may not be blatantly obvious, they’re very easy to learn and configure to your own preferences.

In our opinion, the best way to turn off your tablet is by re-enabling the side key. Once you do, you can manually press a physical button rather than performing a multi-step procedure from your screen.
